“The Contrast Asynchrony” optical illusion has been created by ShapiroLab enthusiasts. While the effect has been known for some time, variations of images, applications and games that give the best insight have been popping out regularly. This variation is surely my favorite. It is very easy to convince yourselves that the center disks are identical in shape and color – you can prove this by simply clicking on the “add/remove” button. The effect produced here is called “perceptual paradox“. The disks appear to modulate out of phase and get light and dark at different moments. Experiment with the FLASH application below!
sooo cool!!!
first comment i think!
Woah! Weird!
It’s a amazing illusion, I had to comprobe it pasting a screenshot on Paint
when you click add/remove can“t it just switch the animation?
The issue is that your brain is looking at contrast to the surrounding circle, rather than absolute color. When watching it with the surroundings turned on, say “light” and “dark” to yourself at the right times and you’ll see that the center dots do alternate together.
Wow, thats really effective, ive never seen an animated one before.
hard to believe, but true.
aint our brains wierd!
well that was cool…i am comment number 7! :) lucky number 7! Everyone leave a comment and see how many we can get…by the way the optical illusion was AWESOME! :P
Like like WHOA!!
The correct link to the shapirolab page is http://www.shapirolab.net .
i don’t believe it.
i can’t get it to happen where they change on the same time. id like to see this slowed down. so you can see the changes in the originals you know?
wao….i got headache by lookin at the image:(
plz paste anothr image that cures this one:p
Indeed we look for contrast and when we can actually see the small circles. Don’t think of it in the way “When one circle appears the other disappears”, think of it in the way “When one circle has a contrast against white (a.k.a. black), the other circle becomes black”
Lucky 11! Just my age! Keep those comments coming people!
If you don’t believe it, try blocking out the borders with your fingers so you can only see the centres. You can see they both change together!
It takes ALOT to make me post now, but this was SOOO kool!!!!
p.s., annonomis w/ fingers, you took my age spot. Oh, whatever, my birthday is next week.
Punch a couple of holes into a piece of paper and place over the flashing image on screen to mask out the surrounding circle.
This proves that the button is not rigging the animation.
One of the most effective optical illusions I have seen, very clever.
that’s cool!
Whoa that’s so weird!!!
by far one of my favorites!!!!
This is soooo cool!!!
cool… and that vampire video on the right, kinda looks like Miley Cyrus!! or maybe I’m wrong
if you put your fingers around it you dont have to add/remove the surrounds
jus thought you might want to know
these kinds of things are always cool to look at! i love it!
i did it without using the button…just focus on one of the centre circles n after a few seconds both of them appeared to flash at the same time
Funkadelic!
You can also do a Print Screen and paste the result into an image editor or word to see that the images are flashing together.
wow i guess it waas really cool the thing is that they are the same collor and siz but when they are blinking with the exteriour disk u think that its not because you the balk blends in the black and the same with the wite
Wow. I’M BACK! This was an awesome illusion. I love it.
Definately the most impressive use of this effect I have ever seen!
AT first I thought it was fake, but then i decided to click the scoller on my mouse and when 1 was back i slowly moved down, frezzing the animation. Proof this is real.
it’s awesome!
i cannot beleive it! so cool!
whoaaa cool
Wow that is amazing how our brains percieve things different from what’s really there! Wow I like that one!
i dont get it
Whoa! That is awesome! It’s kinda like the illusion of two hearts and when the background turns off, the hearts change colour, more plzz!!
Wow! :P
Even knowing that it is flashing light and dark at the same times, it still looks inverted to me :P
