Stillwater Reservoir Droste Effect

Here are two more Droste Effect Illusions, submitted by our visitors! First one you see, is called Stillwater Reservoir, and was made by Matty Coles from Kaysville, Utah. Matty wrote: “Hi, here is an illusion/picture I created. It is a picture that I took of “Stillwater Reservoir” up in the Uinta Mountains of Utah. I edited it in photoshop. I was trying to imitate an effect I saw in a picture of a woman holding a picture frame in a garden.”

The other picture can be seen if you jump inside this article. It was made by Ashley Karraker who wrote: “My name is Ashley. I have an illusion I created on my laptop. Enjoy!” There was also simmilar animation somwhere on this site, think it should still be somwhere here, so you can try, and check it!

Ohh, and almost forgot! How do you like our new website design? I’ll make more changes, but first wanted to hear your opinions and suggestions. So comment, please.

  1. the 2nd one isnt a droste effect its just cascading windows, the drost effect is where it circles out with the picture repeating in the outer (or inner depending on how you look at it) picture and so on and so forth, like the top one

  2. cool……the second one is pretty…i like triangles……and go apple, yes. i like not having viruses…..oh…and….new design? huh? the only thing i noticed different was those little pictures towards the top, near the ads.

  3. Thanks for the compliments on the second one… it took me a while! I know its not hard but it takes time. Thank you to everyone who came by to see it!

  4. cool! It has the same effect as it does when I stand in my bathroom, and there is a mirror on both sides, and it reflects the other one. And it looks as if I’m on a train with a hell of a lot of me.

  5. the second one is fun to do on a computer. just a lot of screen capturing.

i’ve also done something where you screen cap your desktop with icons, move all the icons, and use the screen cap as the background so you have twice the icons. it freaks people out.

  6. The sec. one is fun to do with a computer. It might take a lil long though yes anonymous on the bottom of the comments, i’ve tried the icons too, it’s funneeee =D

  7. the tunnel if u put ur webcam up to ur screen and look at the live image of it it has that affect lol

  8. I really don´t understand the interest in image 2. It´s just the same image repeating over and over, smaller versions superimposed on the larger.

The second image is truly great!
You can follow with your finger from the biggest ´mother´image all the way to the center, while the ACTUAL image is being reduced in size. GENIUS!

I think I have it figured out though…: The ´daughter´images are spliced into their mother images in the top left corner where all you see is blue sky. That would be the easiest place to splice them.

  9. OKAY THERE IS AN APPLICATION ON MAC THAT DOES THAT FOR YOU, IT IS CALLED GRAB. OKAY I HAVE THE APPLICATION AND AFTER SEEING THIS ILLUSION I DID IT USING GRAB. THE BAR SAYING PREVIEW WITH THE BUTTON’S AND WHAT NOT GIVES IT AWAY.

  10. the first 1 is rly cool… but whats so special about the second 1… i do it all the time when im bored

  11. WOWWWWWW!!!

    That first one is DOPE!

Its one continuous strip of photo…very impressive.

The second one is really trippy as well, however, it is much different from the first and much easier to make (clearly done by some college/HS student, look at the To Do list: religion class, spanish, lol…). It reminds me more of a fractal (although, i guess the first one is based off of self-similarity as well).
