“Powers Of One” Illusion

Just because we haven’t talked about Bev Doolittle for some time now, doesn’t mean we think any less of her extraordinary talent. But there’s one great mistake I keep repeating – each time we feature some of HER magnificent art, I wrongfully presume Bev is a guy. No matter how many times you corrected me on this, I keep forgetting what you have told me. I’d like to make up for this by sharing a short bio of the artist:

Bev Doolittle is one of America’s most collected artists. Crowded with intricate visual detail, haunted by presences seen and unseen, her paintings captivate the viewer on many levels. Traveling throughout the west in a camper, Bev had the luxury of time to develop her unique style. Her signature painting, “Pintos“, proved to be a dramatic departure point for Bev when her evolving style and technique merged with her love of nature to create what would become virtually a new genre.

She is often called a “camouflage artist” because her distinctive use of context, design and pattern help viewers discover meanings which seem hidden only until they become obvious. Having all this in mind, after viewing rest of her opus (links in this article), try and see as many hidden animals there are in this picture. Don’t stop after you’ve only seen one or two – there are much more to be discovered!

  1. Wow, this is beautiful. For my part I only see six hidden animals, bears actually. Hum, on second thought, I think I see seven.

  2. I’ve spotted 6 definates so far and a couple of questionable ones.

I like the expression on the horse and it flees.

  3. I see many animals all over the place in this picture. I could probably see more if the image was larger. These old eyes have difficulty finding hidden things on a postage stamp size illustration.

    1. *a lion, a knight on a horse, a wolf, a dog and a bear? and btw, there is more than a lion. there are two i think.

  4. Awesome… I see so many animals … first saw a lion and then the huge ..then slowly realised there were so many of them :)

  5. I was about to say: I see four. But before I type such a thing, I recount them: “Oh there’s one more! And there, and there.
Al together, I see seven now (counting horseman and horse as one). Also, I type every thing out so I wont give spoilers.

  6. Wow! That’s pretty cool! I see 6 bears and an Indian with a spear riding a horse.
    Oh yeah! 1st comment

  7. What a wonderful piece of art. There are so many and the computer picture is so small that I lost count, every thing started to look like an animal. Thanks again for a great optical illusion………..:)

  8. this is small and blury. If I put my face close to it, I can see some animal head around, but it hurts my eyes… Don’t suppose there’s a higher resolution version of this thing around?

  9. I saw the horse & rider as a fairy princess with a wand at first. Oops. But now that my eyes are focused, I see five bears.

  10. Well,I saw a lot of faces(Like usual),and a lot of animals. It’s a good piece of art. I love the nature aspect… You don’t see it as much these days…

  11. 10-15 whow this is stuffed… every time I angle my head a new one pops up. Wish the picture was bigger/better quality so one could see it more detailed. She’s one great artist.

  12. Let’s do it again!

5 bears, 3 humans, a horse, 2 goats, a lioness, 2 jaguars, 3 squirrels, a fairy with a wand (or is it a butterfly?), and eagle and 3 monkeys.
