Certain artists have an affinity for creating optical illusions in their artwork. I, for one, am not one of these artists by any stretch of the imagination, but they’re out there. Artists who create surreal and impossible pieces of art; artists like MC Escher, Salvador Dalí, Rob Gonsalves, and Octavio Ocampo. Today, I’d like to share an Octavio Ocampo painting with you — Ecstasy of the Lilies…
What do you see first when you look at this Octavio Ocampo Ecstasy of the Lilies painting? Do you actually see the lilies first? Or do you see the ecstasy? If you saw a woman in the throws of ecstasy with very few clothes on, take another look. You’ll see that this isn’t really a lady at all.
The trumpets of the flowers make up most of her, including her breasts, shoulders, chest, and facial features. Large leaves at the top in the background of this Octavio Ocampo painting are easily mistaken for hair, and the red vase holding the flowers could be a corset or underbust.
