I haven’t posted a brainteaser on here in a little while, have I. This morning, I woke up with matchstick puzzles on my mind for some reason. I’m odd, I know. Maybe I dreamed about them, or maybe I’m just meant to post a matchstick puzzle today. Maybe my decision will set a series of events into motion that will change the history of the world! Probably not, but you never know.

Okay, I’m still tired and goofy. Moving on to today’s matchstick puzzle…

Can you move exactly four matchsticks so that the resulting arrangement forms five squares?

This matchstick puzzle is a bit tricky and it might take you a little bit to figure it out. I’m not going to give you any hints, but I will show you the solution at the end of this post. No scrolling and peeking at the solution just yet, though! Give it an honest go before you look at the solution.

I will tell you that the solution to this matchstick puzzle should get you thinking and it may not be what you expect.

Ta da! And there you have it! Did you get it on your own or did you have to check out the solution?

I could make 7 squares and only move 3 matches. Ask me how if you cannot determine.

How you did it?

Actually easier than the other way.

Actually I guess that is 10 squares.

Nice!

Actually I screwed up the drawing. This is the correct one.

Ah ok lol

I don’t understand. You have used much more matchsticks than there was in the initial puzzle :-S

How?

silly! it took less than 1 second to solve this puzzle, but the question, with the seven squares and only three moved matches is a heavy one…
