Today’s illusion isn’t exactly illusion, but it’s still pretty awesome! Ruben sent me this image of cutout coins through the Mighty Optical Illusions Facebook page, and I had to share.
I’ve seen coins with shapes cut or stamped out of them before, but seeing the presidents actually removed from the coins is pretty amazing. I can’t help but wonder how they accomplished this. It couldn’t have been an easy task! Visions of a little tiny, itty bity blade stick in my head, but I’m thinking probably not. Lasers maybe? Or aliens? Or wizardry?
Another possibility is that two coins were actually used to make each of the cutout coins. The metal portion surrounding the head on the coin is simply ground away, leaving the head intact with one coin, while the head is stamped out of the other coin. It’s definitely a possibility.
Besides the obvious, there’s something strange about one of these coins, though. Can you spot it?
Whoever cut Washington out of the nickle cut his ponytail off, leaving it on the coin.
you mean Jefferson
Thank you for the correction. I have always thought it was Washington on the nickle. Just goes to show we are never too old to learn something new. Keep up the good work.
