What you see here is an art poster, a satire on false perspective by William Hogarth. It was submitted to me by one of our fans, Thomas Welton. It’s a classic spot the object illusion, where Escher’s influence is more than obvious. Your assignment, this time is to spot as many irregularities you can see, like the time you had to spot them in Andrew Gold’s LP cover and this picture here. I think you should try opening the picture in full size, to see the details better. For those of you ho adore this kind of illusions, I recommend Virgin’s competition illusion, and Lovefilm’s poster illusion. Let’s see who can find the best hidden irregularity down here. Please limit your self to one irregularity per post, so other visitors have good time in spotting them. Enjoy!
The fishing lines cross over oddly.
great illusion
what the hell????…..
the man at the top of the hill is having his pipe lite by the woman in the building
not only does the fishing line cross over oddly, but the more you look at it the more the perspective is oddly done. the sign is posted on two buildings, the house in the background covers the tree, the man on the hill in doing something with the woman in the building and I believe the lake turns into a grazing field for cattle.
interesting stuff
well, the crow sitting atop a tree in the background is very big, isnĀ“t it…
I’m not so sure about the lake turning into a grazing field for cattle; I read it as the cattle is walking around a rock to someplace unseen.
What I also see is the following: The half moon sign is behind the bushes on the hill. The horizon is curved and at that slope, all the water would drain to the left. The house is half way in water. The black bird on the far tree is extremely big (at that size, its wingspan has to be around 3 to 5 meters). The guy that is shooting the gun is shooting in front of the bridge, but is presumably shooting at the swan behind the bridge (use a ruler, and you will see the gun of his barrel is in line with the swan). The cattle is in reverse perspective: he drew the closest one the smallest, and the farthest one the biggest.
the tiles look as if they are dipping into the ground.
wow the sign is on the building bt behind the bushes, wow this is cool….
Those “bushes” that are covering the half moon sign are really trees drawn in reverse perspective, much like the cows. The closer one’s are smaller, and the further one’s are bigger.
It’s not a house. It’s a church.
it’s a great painting, but it’s been posted on here before… recently…
i do not get it
The support holding the sign/flag is connecting/connected to both buildings.
dont forget the back bird on the tree
very cool =)
The Flag is behind the trees!
very nice
I think this is a repeat.
the post is on the building behind the man and on the building behind the building.. also the sign on the building is behind trees on the hill.
The horses are behind the tree, but the tree is from the land behind the bridge.
It’s a nice illusion, but I doubt Hogarth was really that influenced by Escher considering he died a hundred years before Escher was born ;-)
wow its gr8 the bird on the tree at the back looks way to big, the man in the window looks like he is giving that man on the hill a light, the house looks crooked, the sheep are in the water, the church is half in the water, the barrels look like they are falling, the tree at the back is in front of the flag, the water at the back is at a funny angle, it looks like theres a tree on the bridge and the trees are crossed over at the side.
Cheers and Waldemar Sauer, didn’t you see his request to limit answers to one?
Like the cows, the tree on the hill also have incorrect perspective and go from smaller to larger.
Some people seem to have difficulty with the instructions to “limit your self to one irregularity per post”.
hello
All the lines on the right half of the drawing (tiles, building planks etc.) lead to incorrect and conflicting vanishing points
ok, easy you got the two guys fishing, the guy out the window talking to the guy on the hill, the flag on the building is in the trees. There might be more, but those three are quick to spot.
Well i’m from sweden so my english aren’t perfekt, but i will try.
It’s two house’s, but the flag (or wathever it is) is stuck in both house.
The flag is hidding behinde the trees.
The crow in the trees is wery big.
The trees gets bigger and bigger, if it was a foto shuld and the trees had the same size shuld it be smaler and smaler.
The sheeps gets bigger too.
The biggest mans fishingrod goe’s behind the hourse and it’s realy long.
The man with the dog is sitting higher upp then the sheep, but the water is still like a beatch on both places.
The men undther the bridge is shooting on the bright, but in real world shuld it hit the bird at the other boat.
the men at the hill is doing soething withe the woman in the window.
the barrels is standing wery weird, won“t the fall soon?
the hill-man is the same size as a tree, or is it a bush?
it’s growing a tre from the small house roof, or it is growing on the bridghe.
Did i forgett anything? hope i didn’t.
But well, it’s just a painting, anything is possible!
//Ida
not only are the cattle in reverse perspective, so are the trees.
Also, the church in the background… the cross at the top would not be facing the viewer but rather facing the FRONT of the church.
if he/she said only leave 1 irregularitie then only leave 1
the sign posts are anchored to different parts of the building
the man under the bridge that is firing his gun looks as if he is already through the bridge. BUT the smoke from his musket is on the other side of the bridge.
Great post! Great illusion!
Keep it coming!
I think if anything, Hogarth was the influence on Escher, as Hogarth lived 1697-1764; and Escher 1898-1972. Fascinating etching though.
It’s totally photoshopped! There’s no way this is real!!!
everything has a weird perspective for example althoughtit has been comented the size of all things is not proportional, the man in the back is gian compared to the horses and the swan in the back is also pretty big, the same happens to the bird, and the tree in the back seems more closer than the church but is behind the hill, so its bigger, the church is getting underwater, and its sizes arent real and the sunset is in the back of the picture but the shadow in the first man has another position
everything is out of position like a tree in the bidge or the several trees in the back that gets tiner as they come closer or the curve ocean and the boat is getin in to the bridgeo and the closer tree gets behind the curch besides every thing thats obvius like the mans fishing the moon behind the trees the wood sticked to both houses, etc…
the shadow from the bridge should not go over the first swan in the pic.

I am sorry to say that I used to visit this site daily, but now cannot remember as much because the widget engine won’t run. I’ve tried updating, but alas, it won’t work. I really dont care if this comment is posted or not i just want to tell you that when I stumbled upon this illusion, I was surprised, because this happens to be an illusion that I have in an optical illusion book at home. I think your new site, mighty magic tricks, Is great and will now be visited alot. WAIT! I don’t need the widget… I’ll just add it o one of my homepage tabs!!! Thanks for reading this. And on the mighty magic tricks site, please don’t approve spoiler comments. please. Maybe approve them, but two or three days after you post the illusion.
I like how the sheep (and the trees for that matter) get smaller as they get nearer. The church in the distance you can see both the top of the steeple and the side view and the bottom is half in the water. And, man, that’s one long fishing pole.
the boat looks like it is going to ride on the bridge? weird…..
didnt any of you notice that the coast keeps going on into the sky?
“It’s totally photoshopped! There’s no way this is real!!!”
Photoshopped??? Really? Really? Photoshop back in 1753? Do we really have to dignify this with an answer?
OMG that is scary !
The church is half on the water, and the second bldg. on the right would have to be on the water. Oh and the barrels are defying gravity!
I think I have a good one. The man in the foreground has a right shoe that looks like an alligator head with its mouth open. Can you top that one? Awsome web site!
EVERYONE MISSED ONE OBJECT!!!!!!!! think bout this: the guys are fishing right? there are boats right? so that part the boats are on must be water. tell me: how can cows stand on water?
the foliage from the left tree in back is behind the house way out there
the crow is one damn big crow and the sign with the crescent moon on it is partially hidden by the trees
One irregularity none of you noticed was that the man closest to the perspective on the picture is standing on thin air it looks like there is a wall is going down instead of a floor/tile.
the cows are standing on water and the cresent moon is upward
ahhh! it messed with me
There is a man and a women reaching for each other in the sky hmmmm
take a look at the cows, the further they go the smaller they should be
The horses on the bridge are walking into a tree… why would there be a tree on the bridge?
You will notice first a large man in the front of the picture and a second man with his dog. When you look at where there fishing lines cross, you will notice the fishing line of the first man moves over after crossing the line of the second man as if it was broken and then put back on the page.
One more. The “Man and his dog” I think is a woman… there is a shadow on the back that you can look at as being hair.. this wouldn’t make sense either cause its man and his dog, not woman and her dog.
the church is going near the water look!!!!
and i see a million more!!!!!!
Look at the man on the hill in the back compared to the size of the church that guys WAY to big =o
Well there is a woman’s face in the tree … (the tree that is on the top next to the man under the clouds) look closely! ;)
The sign on the building in the foreground is partially covered by some trees on the hill behind it.
The buildings holding the sign is very very apart look!
The man fishing in the right corner that’s up close the bricks under his feet look a little weird.
the sign things behind a tiny tree……… weird
the sky is just more land
from the church and where the man is standing going outward
Wow. the cows are walking on land, which suddenly turns into the lake/river/ocean/whatever O: =)
White clouds are land, grey are see, and dark are stones :)
WOW this so cool!!!!!!
The guy on the hill at the back is pouring something into the womans glass when the house and hill should be very far apart.
look at the bird above the tree..it is way too big
for the tree..
1.that man can fish from that docks until the river
2.1 guy is at a tower well another guy is at a
hill then how come they can talk
3.that shop sign can be behind the hill
4.the cows get smaller when they get nearer

2.look at the sigh with a moon on it
3.how can those to people onr in the building the other on the hill light the candle
4.why is the churh on water
5.why are the cows getting smaller the more closer they are
6.that sailboat is almost on the bridge
7.there is a huge crow on the tree
8.a tree is growing on a bridge
and thats all i can find
the sign is obviously closer to you then the trees on the hill, but its drawn behind the trees.
almost no one realizes the barrels in the front of the picture. the barrel behind the upright one is on the ledge in front of it.
almost no one realizes the barrels in the front of the picture. the barrel behind the upright one is on the ledge in front of it.
strange how people don’t notice it.
apple pie
oh and the house with the woman is at the wrong angle
That bird is huge!!
oh and look at the swan near the sailboat!
