Mighty Optical Illusions

Stereograms inspired the film, Inception.

Inception: Picture in a Picture?

Today’s topic: Stereograms 101!

For those who don’t know what stereograms are, they are 3D pictures hidden within a 2D image.  Are you mind boggled yet?  No?  Then we need to go deeper!

Often times, stereograms are referred to Magic Eyes.  Stereograms are optical illusions of depth that come about from the eye’s and the brain’s creation of a 3D image from a 2D image.  It all depends on the functioning of the human visual system.

If you are looking for a new hobby, a way to sharpen your eyes, you will want to try stereograms as they have magical hidden images in them.  It took me a while to find the images attached below!

Let’s go fishing!

What’s in the box?

When you look at a stereogram, your eyes perceive similar objects differently because of different perspectives like the distance between your eyes.  To perceive the 3D image/ form, you have to overcome the normally automatic coordination between focus (accommodation) and the angle of your eyes.

Did you know that this naked eye perception of 3D images from 2D images dates back to 1959?  Tomorrow we will let you know how they are created.  Comment below on what you see here?
